A Dose of Inspiration from the Matrix Awards

The Kaplow team was on hand at last week’s Matrix Awards to support our fearless leader and New York Women in Communications President, Liz Kaplow. The NYWICI Matrix Awards honor outstanding women in the fields of advertising, books, broadcasting, film, magazines, new media, newspapers and public relations.

Liz opened the ceremony by explaining what made this year’s Matrix Award honorees stand out – courage, curiosity and the willingness to say “yes.” It was inspiring to be in the midst of so many successful, driven and powerful women.

Here are some of our favorite tips from this year’s winners:

Jane Mayer, Staff Writer, The New Yorker

  • “I love it that women today do not feel the need to trade off being badass for beautiful.”

Cynthia McFadden, Senior Legal and Investigative Correspondent, NBC

  • “My dad gave me great advice: ‘Go out and find a job you care about. Anyone can have a job they don’t like.’”

Jonelle Procope, President and Chief Executive Officer, The Apollo Theater

  • “The unplanned moments in life are the most rewarding and can take you to places you never dreamed you could go.”

Dyllan McGee, Founder and Executive Producer, MAKERS

  • “Focus on what matters. Don’t get caught up in the minutiae.”

Eileen Naughton, Vice President, Global Accounts & Global Agencies, Google

  • “Dreams don’t always come true. I never became the Paris Bureau Chief of Time Magazine, but I did become its president.”

Wendy Clark, Senior Vice President, Global Sparkling Brand Center

  • “True gender equality isn’t isn’t about HR, it’s about good business.”

Queen Latifah, Musician, Award-Winning Actress, Record-Label President, Author, Entrepreneur, and Cover Girl

  • “To hold women like us back is just futile. We are all queens!”
