I’ve always liked Salma Hayek Pinault as an actress. I’ll happily admit that I watch the 90’s hit “Fools Rush In,” whenever it’s on – no matter how many times I’ve seen it before. But now I have a newfound admiration for Hayek Pinault as a person.
Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of working on an event for my client, the Avon Foundation for Women where Hayek Pinault as a guest speaker. The 2nd Annual Avon Communications: Speaking Out About Violence Against Women took place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York in recognition of International Women’s Day.
As a PR professional for almost a decade, I’ve seen several stars lend their celebrity to charitable cause, and I know first-hand all the work that goes into prepping for it. But Hayek Pinault was quite different. She didn’t read from a script or teleprompter—she simply spoke from her heart and told moving anecdotes about her passion for the cause. Her speech was one of true emotion and she even started to get choked up at one point. One sentence has stayed with me: “Not every country in the world has a problem with hunger, but every place in the world has a problem with domestic violence.”
Hayek Pinault drove the message home that everyone can help in some way. One way she mentioned the new Avon Empowerment Charm Necklace. It’s only five dollars and 100% of net profits will be donated to the Avon Foundation to fund programs to end violence against women. Consider buying one for a special woman in your life—and let them know Salma has one, too!
